NANCY NUNGURRAYI (born circa 1935)
Acrylic on Belgian linen
each 122 x 61 cm
The roundels in these paintings depict the rockhole site of Tjuntulpul, slightly
north-west of the Kiwirrkura Community. The line work depicts the sandhills
surrounding the site. A group of women, represented by the ‘U’ shapes, camped
at Tjuntulpul before travelling south to Marrapinti. At Marrapinti the women
made nose bones, also known as marrapinti, which are worn through a hole made
in the nose web. These nose bones were originally used by both man and women
but are now only inserted by the older generation on ceremonial occasions.
