KANYA TJAPANGATI (born circa 1951)

This painting depicts designs associated with Tingari Ceremonies at the rockhole
site of Kirritjina, north of Jupiter Well. In mythological times a large group of
Tingari men camped at this site before traveling east to Wala Wala, Kiwirrkura and
then north-east to Lake Mackay. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are
of a secret nature no further detail is given.

Kanya was born at the site of Pamatjatunya, which is west of the Jupiter Well area
in Western Australia. His father has three wives and was the older brother of Pinta
Pinta Tjapanangka. Charlie Tjapangarti and Nanyuma Napangarti are also closely
related to Kanya, sharing the same father but different mothers. He traveled into
Papunya with Jeremy Long by truck on one of the last government patrols in the
area. Kanya commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1981 and in 1999
contributed to Kiwirrkura mens’ painting as part of the Western Desert Dialysis
Appeal.
