JOSEPH JURRA TJAPALTJARRI (born circa 1952)
Acrylic on Belgian linen
122 x 122 cm
This painting depicts designs associated with the soakage water site of
Ngatjapirritji, south of Kiwirrkura Community. In mythological times a large
group of Tingari men camped at this site before travelling north-east to Tarkul,
north of Mt. Webb. They gathered the bark from the sandhill rattlepod shrub
(Crotalaria cunninghamii) This bark is used to make sandals which are worn when
the sand is very hot. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret
nature no further detail is given.
