This painting depicts designs associated with the site of Kaakuratintja (Lake
MacDonald). In mythological times a large group of Tingari Men, both young
and old, travelled to this site from the west. A fierce hailstorm occurred
which killed them all. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of
a secret nature no further detail is given.

Willy was born at Patjantja, to the south west of Lake MacDonald. He is the
second of three brothers one of which was Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi. Willy
was living on the
Western side of Lake MacDonald prior to walking into Papunya with a large group
in 1976. His first contact with Europeans was one of Jeremy Long’s welfare
patrols near Lake MacDonald. In the 1980’s he emerged as one of the senior
Pintupi painters. Willy ’s
senior position in his community enables him to paint the most significant
and secret parts of the Tingari stories, many of which cannot be revealed to
the uninitiated.
