“Between 1938 and 1940 the whole climate of artistic opinion and practice
in Sydney was affected radically by the return of a new generation of students
from abroad. During the 1920’s and 1930’s Julian Ashton, towards
the end of a long lifetime of distinguished teaching produced a highly talented
group of students. Among the most prominent were Grace Crowley, Rah Fizelle,
William Dobell, John Passmore, Jean Bellette and Paul Haefliger.
In some respects (Bellette’s) work recalls that of Henry Moore in the way
she achieves emotional tension by using massive, classical forms to express the
isolatedness of the individual”.
