NYURAPAYIA NAMPITJINPA
(MRS BENNETT)
(BORN CIRCA 1935)
Acrylic on Belgian linen
153 x 122cm
This painting depicts designs associated with the travels of a group of women
to the rockhole site of Yumarra, near Tjukula in Western Australia. The women
had travelled from Punkilpirri, a large permanent water site, north-west of
Docker River in the Walter James Range. They later continued their travels
to the north through Tjukula and Tjalili.
The women gathered the edible berries known as kampurarrpa or desert raisin
from the small shrub Solanum centrale also the mangata (quandong) fruit which
grows in this area. They also made damper from the seeds known as Kalpari from
the rat-tail goosefoot plant.
