The painter Norman Carter (1875 1963) noted
in an article published in Art and Australia (August 1938) that Rees
work
... is not directly painted as a result of momentary impression. It is not
topographical in the guide book character of so much landscape work that is
produced... His work is the result of a deep impression which developed by
mature consideration...he is himself in his work. He seeks the
secluded spot, a pool in a forest, a quiet inlet of the upper harbour, cool
greens and patterns of sunlight on rocks and grass. (Free 1972)
Throughout his long career his work was widely accepted by all factions, largely
because of its underlying sincerity and unpretentiousness. Painted, drawn,
etched or lithographed, his work has in it a quality of monumental grandeur
that comes from careful investigation of a new experience, presented as if
for the first time. (McCulloch 1994)
