Oil on canvas
Signed WESTWOOD upper right and lower right
110.0 x 110.0 cm
Westwood is largely self
taught, not withstanding visits to the Prado while in Spain and some
lessons from Justin O Brien and Jeffrey Smart during the mid
to late sixties. He was the federal governments official artist
for the 75th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, which involved
travel to Gallipoli with the veterans. Much of his work may be considered
photo-realist in style, containing some elements of surrealist painting
reminiscent of the work of Magritte.
The artist was the winner of the Archibald Prize in 1989 (for a portrait of
the critic and artist Elwyn Lynn) and in 1992 (for a portrait of the then Prime
Minister, Paul Keating).
