Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri (born circa 1927)

Synthetic polymer powder paint on masonite

122 x 122cm

PROVENANCE
David Mortimer Collection, Alice Springs

This unusually large and fine painting on masonite was executed in 1977-78 and brought by Billy into the Pines Homestead Lodge and sold directly to Mortimer. The board was then nailed up in the dining room where it stayed until the Lodge was demolished to make way for the local K-mart store.

Billy Stockman worked as a stockman on Napperby Station before arriving at Papunya. He was chairman of Papunya Tula Artists in the 1970s, a central Australian delegate to the National Aboriginal Congress (1976) and a member of the Australia Council's Aboriginal Arts Board (1975-79). Billy Stockman also attended the opening of the major exhibition "Dreaming: The Art of Aboriginal Australia" in New York in 1988. He now resides in Alice Springs.
