PROVENANCE
Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd., Alice Springs,
painted at Kintore.
Catalogue Number WN0012136
This painting depict designs associated with the travels of a group of women
from the claypan site of Watanuma, north-west of the Kintore Community. The
women passed through the rockhole site of Malparingya and continued east to
Pinari, also north-west of Kintore. The "U" shapes represent the
women and the lines show the spun hair-string which is used in ceremonies.
The roundels are the rockholes and camp sites. During their travels they gathered
the small black seed known as mungilypa or samphire from the small fleshy sub-shrub
Tecticornia verrucosa. This seed is ground into a paste which is cooked in
the coals to form a type of unleavened bread.
Wintjiya was born at Malparinga, north-east of Walungurru. She first moved
to Haasts Bluff and later to the newly established settlement at Papunya. She
is second mother to Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula and Mitjili Napurrula, who are
the children of her late husband's other wives. Wintjiya began painting for
Papunya Tula Artists in 1996.
