COLIN PENNOCK STRATA
This work is inspired from my experience of the Hawkesbury where I live, and the Australian bush landscape. It identifies human attempts to suppress the landscape and the natural regeneration of the bush. I have been interested to show landscape in both microcosm, as well as a wider experience. There is an obvious cyclical energy of change in the landscape, how a burnt tree hollow stands amongst lush gum leaves. The relative peace of the bush bears witness to past fires and the promise of repetition of the known. In this way the Australian landscape, as opposed to other places constantly reminds me of regeneration, and my comprehension of what is ancient and already formed in other global landscapes, are formed in the repetitive patterns laid down by the Australian landscape. My responses to these landscapes are expressed through various methods and layering of paint in rhythms and technique. The surface is layered and the layers represent strata within me and my surroundings.
