PAULINE SUNFLY NANGALA (born circa 1957)
‘Tjanparnatatji’
Acrylic on canvas
120 x 80 cm
Pauline has painted some of her father’s country. This country is named Tjanparnatatji and
found south of Balgo near the community of Yakka Yakka. The story for this painting tells
of the Wati Kutjarra (Two Goanna Men) who travelled throughout the desert during the Tjukurrpa (Dreaming). They created many of the landforms seen today. The two elongated
shapes at the bottom of the painting show where the men camped. The central circle is a salt
lake and the upper circle is another campsite.

Pauline is the daughter of the famous Balgo painters, Sunfly Tjampitjin, and Bai Bai
Napangardi from whom she has inherited many Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) stories. Pauline learnt
to paint from years of watching her father. Pauline was born at the old Balgo Mission hospital
and was educated through the mission school. She recalls working in the kitchen, the laundry
and clearing the grounds of the mission. She has spent some time in Fitzroy Crossing and has visited Broome and Alice Springs, otherwise she has remained in Balgo with her young family.
